


Avodah and Birthright

As a young girl growing up in a secular Jewish family, my main connection to Judaism, besides our annual Passover Seder and Chanukah parties, included learning about the importance of social justice. My family’s example and my own experience as the sole Jew in a small town taught me that as Jews, who have suffered so much violence and oppression, we need to stand up to authority and fight to ensure that other ethnic, racial, and religious groups are not persecuted. While I absorbed and appreciated that lesson, I longed to learn more about Judaism. I longed to join a Jewish community, to observe Shabbat, to attend synagogue frequently enough to feel comfortable.
